Baseball Themed Activities

My family loves baseball, especially my husband! Every year we’ve made celebrating on Opening Day and Postseason a tradition. This post shares multiple ideas on baseball themed activities for kids.

I think it’s important to mention that I realize the menu for today isn’t the healthiest. But we wanted to bring the ballpark to our home and we rarely eat healthy at the stadium. Click here for printable schedules if you are interested in following along with our day.

What Baseball Themed activities did we Do?

Gross Motor Movement Activities

  • “Run the bases”
    • Set up home plate and the bases in your yard or house. We had to play inside because at the time of writing this, the heat was unreal! You can use anything to mark the bases (rocks, trees, etc.) One adult plays the music “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” while the other participants run around the bases. After some time, stop the music. The runners must find the nearest base to sit on or touch as fast as they can. This game is very similar to musical chairs.
  • Any kind of carnival game that requires throwing
    • Beanbag toss: see post from Circus Day on how to make your own if you don’t already have one
    • Click here to access the printable PDF for step-by-step directions
    • My sister and brother-in-law got my daughter these textured balls for her birthday. She loved throwing them in her laundry basket.

  • Uniform relay:
    • Gather articles of clothing that resemble a baseball uniform
      • pants
      • shirt/jersey
      • tall socks
      • cleats/tennis shoes
      • helmet
    • Make sure to gather enough articles of clothing for each participant. For example, if you have 3 participants gather 3 pants, 3 shirts, etc. Space each individual garment approximately 3 feet apart in a straight line. Have the participants race to see who can put the clothing on the fastest. By the end, each participant should be wearing a full uniform. For more fun, make the uniforms a few sizes too big!😊

  • Play T-ball and/or catch outside: This was the easiest activity to set up and my daughter’s favorite activity!

Crafty/Fine Motor Activities

  • Stamp your child’s handprint on a baseball using a stamp pad
  • If your child’s hand is too large for the ball, or you have more than one child, stamp fingerprints instead

This is a picture from my husband’s first Father’s Day. Our daughter was only a few months old when this picture was taken, hence the tiny hand.

  • Print this template from the resource library
  • There are two handouts in the resource library with step-by-step directions:
    • Individuals that OWN a cutting machine (ie. Cricut)
    • Individuals WITHOUT a cutting machine
      • For individuals without a cutting machine, just poke the holes using a bamboo skewer.

  • Paint laces on a baseball: I have a template made that you access here. Use finger paint to make laces.

  • Pin the bases on the diamond: This is the same concept as pin the tail on the donkey.

I drew a baseball field on copy paper and colored it.

I taped it to my daughter's easel. Taping it to a door or wall will also work.

Cut out small squares and label each participant’s initial.

*My husband was extremely good at this game so he needed more turns to disorient him. After a few turns we let my daughter place the bases without being blindfolded. She enjoyed seeing much better than not, HA (she was 2 at the time I am writing this). My husband asked her to pin her base on the pitcher’s mound and she successfully did. This made his already “head-over-heels” daddy’s heart melt even more. 😊

  • Coloring sheets
    • Option 1
    • Option 2: Baseball number tracing
      • To adapt this coloring sheet activity to make it more difficult, I requested my daughter color a specific number with a specific color. For example, “color number 4 purple” and “color number 11 green” to incorporate working on identifying numbers and colors.
    • Option 3

Sing: “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”

  • Adapt this song into a game by pausing the song and having your child freeze in the position he/she was in. Resume moving whenever the singer starts again.

Play I SPY:

Baseball Stadium Scavenger Hunt:

  • Print the PDF and find all the items with your family at the baseball stadium.

Developmental Skills Targeted:

  • Cognitive Development: problem solving, sustained attention, information processing speed, cognitive flexibility, pattern recognition
  • Social and Emotional Development: listens and follows directions, pride in accomplishments (This is the first time I’ve done anything like the lacing activity with my 2 year old. We had to come back for multiple attempts to finish because she became frustrated. But once she did finish, she felt very proud that she completed it.)
  • Sensory Integration: tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive
  • Motor planning and Coordination
  • Speech and Language Development: Receptive language (lots of receptive language listening and learning new games)
  • Fine motor skills: Pencil skills (scribbling, coloring, drawing, lacing), pincer grasp, bilateral hand integration
  • Gross motor skills: Locomotor skills (running, jumping), Object Control Skills (throwing, catching, hitting t-ball, kicking)
  • Vision: visual motor, visual memory, visual scanning

What did we eat?

  • Baseball pretzel bites: Even though our pretzel bites didn’t look as pretty as the inspiration, they still tasted delicious!
baseball themed food
    • In order to get the candy melt to attach to the pretzel I had to bake the pretzel bites longer than the recommended time which caused the white candy melts to turn a little brown. The candy melt chipped on some of them when decorating.
    • My daughter loved using the edible writing pens to draw the baseball laces.

  • Pizza with pepperoni shaped like a baseball OR baseball field (we made mini pizzas)
